The above flag is that of East Timor, not Timor. West Timor, which is called Indonesia Timor (East Indonesia) has a four colour striped flag - yellow, red, white and green.

The west part was Dutch and the Eastern part was Portuguese.
The eastern part, East Timor, is a democracy and is trying to cope with having had years of Indonesian abuse and tyranny when they overran it in 1975.

Now, with some help they have kicked out their tyrants.

That's one reason Al Qaeda is pissed off with Australia, because we helped them. And about bloody time too!

So hand off East Timor please.

Sorry for this rant, but I had to get it off my chest, I know many people from East Timor and they have my untold sympathy.

I believe they prefer Timor-Leste, or "Diet Timor" if you will. And, I'm sorry, but I want their flag. Hence, they're done for.

So ... I posted nearly-identical questions on renting an apartment or condo in Puerto Escondido at the same time, here and on the TT. I've gotten three specific recommendations on TT, and zero here.

And yet, there still exists a free and independent Timor-Leste. See, you have your priorities all screwed up. That's the problem with this revolution.

I will aid this revolution if I am promised 3 things should the coup be sucessfull (which no doubt it will be)
1. A pool and place for me to tan. Sure seems trite, but Seattle makes me pasty so great tanning spots are like gold to us.
2. 3 possibly 4 cabana boys. Okay cabana men. I dont discriminate so they can be pulled from whatever country.
3. My own laundry machine in my own house. Oh and free food and an unending supply of diet coke, beer, cigarettes, gin and green peppers. Oh and a gilded throne (please dont put up a picture of the golden toilet) A real throne. The title is unimportant, but let's try to keep it tasteful.

Wow this thread really took off. I found some useful information on ThornTree about traveling in and out of Tibet, so I thought they had it going on over there.

I'm starting to realize I'm better off spending my time on BootsnAll and popping over to TT once and awhile for the obscurer stuff.

Oh, and if you give me about 6-8 months, I'll be sure to share my worldly and exotic experiences getting in and out of Tibet!

Anecdotally speaking ... my thread on BNA about accommodations in Romania yielded a lively discussion now over 30 replies, including an offer to meet someone in Arad and be shown around the town. A similar thread on the Eastern Europe branch of TT netted two replies.

Flyertalk is much more than simply collecting points. # of members, participation, and ability to get any question you have answered -- makes flyertalk the superior community. I've planned many trips and have incorporated bootsnall, thorntree, fodors, you name it into my research. Flyertalk is far better than all the rest combined when it comes to the ability to get ANY question about travel answered.

The only reason I came back to bootsnall today was in response to this weeks self congratulary newsletter.

Thanks for the tip doglover.

I hadn't heard of flyertalk, but will check it out. I think everyone here is all for knowing about other resources -- different sites offer different things -- even if they prefer BnA or even TT as a primary "hang out" site.

Here's a test: I'm going to post an identical question on Fodors, Frommers, TT, and BNA (I checked out FlyerTalk, but it doesn't really seem relevant to the way I travel).

My own biases: I like BNA the most, but suspect I will get more useful specific information on TT. Fodors is hit or miss; Frommers people will tell me who their favorite travel agent will be but won't be much help for a solo traveler.

I'll be back in a few days with the results!

I'm a member of the Flyertalk forums also. BootsnAll is not trying to be a Flyertalk.

Try asking about bus connection from Puno to Arequipa in Flyertalk. Ask them about hostels in Prague. Ask about surf lessons in Bali. Travel isn't just about air travel.

Welcome back, I guess.

I like FlyerTalk, too, but use it for totally different purposes. Much of the time I have felt disregarded because I don't have a lot of posts there, which I find with various bulletin boards. It's great for FF stuff, but BnA/ThornTree are around for totally different reasons. Superiority complexes are in the eyes of the holders, I guess.

These different travel sites are not like some professional sports team where you have to root for one and thumb your nose at the others. This is not about competition.
