To Palm, or Not to Palm?

Discuss and debate travel gear: backpacks, boots, packing stuff and all things technical like phones, mp3 players, GPS systems and other techno-gadgets.

I have a Palm TX. It's indispensable. Besides photos, videos and task manager, it makes a great ebook reader. I used to lug around five or six books. Now I have a hundred or so I got free on the Internet stored on my SD card. I much prefer reading books on its backlit display instead of clunky old paper, especially in dimly lit guest house rooms.

I am deciding between a palm type handheld device and a cell phone that has it all built in? What do people think?

The new Palms are nice, eh? And very expensive. And I, being a total klutz, would drop one into the sea or leave it behind on the airplane.

That is why I take along my Palm M105. Remember those?
Takes AAA batteries. Costs about $15 on eBay.
Has all the functions that I need and, the best part, when I leave it behind in a guesthouse, I am not out much.

I use it to scribble notes during the day, then, once I get to an internet cafe, I expand upon the notes that I have written. I use "Big Clock" to see what time it is at home. I play "Domino!" on the bus.

Oh, I have "good" Palm Pilots, but those stay at home. Besides, they need to be recharged; they cannot run on AAA batteries.

My blog hasn't suffered.
