I originally tried selling my bigger things one-by-one on craigslist. But after too many people no-showed on me, I decided to do a moving sale instead. And tomorrow's the day.
I really have no idea what to expect. I've posted it a few times on craigslist and on a listserv for a professional group I belong to. My luck...one of two things happens...1) no one shows up or 2) I have 50 people outside my front door at 10 am, all wanting to buy the same 2-3 items.

Good luck!
I usually just give everything away. It's so much easier than haggling with people over the value of some stuff I'm trying to get rid of. I have no patience for it, "Here take it, it's yours, just please haul it away!"
I've given up. I never try to sell anything.
(I was in the retail business once.Total failure. Couldn't sell socks to an eskimo.)

Thanks! Yeah, I generally give things away too. But since my last day at work is December 14th and I have no idea when I'll earn an income again, I figure I might as well make as much money as I can, while I can.
I'm sure there will be plenty of leftovers that I give away.

Hnmmm...well....I supposed I'll have to describe it as a flop. Don't get me wrong, I did sell things and make some money, but not nearly enough to make it worth all the trouble and effort. And people continued to flake out on me. Two people told me they'd be there right at the beginning to purchase my coffee table. Neither showed. A woman called last night to say she'd be there in the morning to buy a table I was selling. She also no showed.
The funny thing is how popular my dresser was. The original plan was to give it away. It was an old dresser, somewhat scratched up, something I purchased from Salvation Army a few years ago. I really had no attachment to it. But since I was having a moving sale, I went ahead and put a sign on it asking $40 for it. There was actually competition over my dresser and I got the full $40 for it. Bizarre.
Anyway...back to selling items one by one. I have a few weeks left.

Sorry it didn't go as well as you'd hoped. I think time of year probably had a lot to do with it; yard sales seem more successful in the summer/fall time frame rather than closer to the holiday season.
Last time I had a yard sale (2004), it was a chaotic pain in the behind - but fortunately made enough to make it worthwhile. Even so, my attitude these days is more like Sophie9's - just give it away.

Yeah, I agree that time of the year didn't help. People are mostly focused on Christmas shopping. Plus Saturday's are generally a better day but there was no way I could have been ready in time to do in yesterday. And living in an apartment complex puts me at a disadvantage since I don't get away drive-by traffic. Oh well....I did make money. And it helped me organize my stuff so it'll be easier to figure out what top get rid of and what to ship to my parents.

I'm not sure when you're leaving but if you try again after the holidays, esc. March or April you may have much better luck.

Yeah, I know now's not the best time of the year to be selling stuff cause people are focused on holiday shopping. But I vacate my apartment on Dec. 20th so I don't have much choice. Anyway, I've sold enough stuff now that if I give the rest of it away, I can life with that.
And as a funny aside, I sold my mattress and box springs yesterday to some college students who were buying it for a friend as a Christmas present. That's something I never expected - my mattress as a Xmas present!

Selling things one by one is tedious and doesn't always work...sometimes you have to relist things multiple times, but keep doing it!

Oh trust me, I know. I listed and re-listed and re-listed. I'm now down to crunch time. About 6 things to sell by December 20th.
