Just in case anyone is interested. If you get your ticket in advance you can travel by coach in the UK for £1. The train is usually faster but if it is cheap you are after...

What a great site, thanx jan. imagine doing an overnite ride for 1 pound, that would be without a doubt the cheapest accommodation ive ever had in the UK, especially since with backpacking money is the concern, not time. im definatley bookmarking that page.

the UK is a small country - so maybe there are not so many buses running nightime (if any at all).

Jan, did you read the advert on the tube this morning on the way to work ? There are heaps of overnight bus services in the UK. The trip from London to Newcastle alone will take you all day - best to do it at night.

Here are two other competitive coach companies:

Eurolines

Megabus

Note that online purchase fees and other travel taxes do apply so the fares will not really be £1.

national express doesn't have a booking fee - they tend not to run their services from midnight to 5am.
Optional insurance - 1 pound. No other charges.

Couch from Newcastle to London takes 6h 40 min - if there are no problems on the motorway.

I am cycling - so rarely have to use the tube.

From my extensive research on getting the hell out of London at every chance possible I've found that almost every long distance route has a late/overnight bus. Not only is it cost effective for the traveller but also for the company (less traffic = less fuel = les ££)

The London Newcastle route has one overnight, the London Manchester route has 5 that run between midnight and 5am, London Liverpool has 2; hell, even the 2-3 hour London to Bristol route has one that runs after midnight.

Above I was being general about the fees as it differs per provider, however I have yet to snag one of these elusive £1 fares as they are at inconvenient times (who wants to return from a long relaxing weekend at 5:30am?)
