Hi There,

I'm starting to plan a RTW trip and wanted a rough idea of how much cash to budget daily in various countries. i'm planning to start in South America then --> USA --> Canada --> Europe --> UK. I'm australian but also have a british passport so can hopefuly get some work in the UK. anyway any rough estimates would be greatly apreciated. Cheers

Europe is very diverse budget-wise. E.g. in Slovakia 20 Euro a day is a lot, but on the other hand I could only stay under 50 Euro a day by cooking for myself and not buying anything I didn't need. Those are extremes, so count on 35 Euro a day on average if you're spending an equal amount of time in western and eastern Europe, and stay at hostels or cheap hotels.

Oops - I forgot: The second example was referring to Venice.

In regard to how much CASH you should bring, the more the better, of course . If you are a budget traveller, then count on $35 USD average in the USA. Don't know about Canada, UK and Europe since I have not been to those places.

Not sure exactly. My wife and I traveled to Margarita Island near Venezuela, Ecuador Colombia, and Peru. rooms were very cheap most places, especially Ecuador and Peru. Some rooms for the both of us were 3$ up to 6 dollars. Don't think we paid more except on Marg. Isl. where we paid $15 for both of us incl. breakfast.

One place in ecuador, in Vilacabamba, stayed in a place that cost us 15$ for the two of us, but it was a backpackers type of resort and included breakfast and dinner, pool, suana, basketball court, ping-pong and pool and we had private room with our own bathroom. It was nice.

Overall it is very cheap. We always ate the menu del dia which was about 2.50$ a person and had the soup, rice and chicken or something like that. Not too bad.

We are heading down there ourselves.. starting a round the world trip for up to two years in Sept. 2003. We hope to have a good amount of cash, but that is for two people. I love South America as it is amazing and the prices are even more amazing.

Cheers guys! those little estimates will help a lot with my planning. i think budget wise i will stay in south america a lot longer than the US to stretch my money out. hopefully friends and relatives in UK and Canada will be accomodating if anyone else has any tips they'll be gladly accepted.

If you want to keep your budget going strong and also visit the Northeast, more specifically NYC, stay in Brooklyn or Harlem and avoid midtorm and downtown hostels which charge up to $40 for a bunk! It might take you longer to get to midtown or THe Village or where ever but NYC is not just those places and uptown and Brooklyn are great places to visit as well.

Just a thought as I have Aussie friends that are appalled at the cost and state of some of the downtown hostels.

cheers for the info. i'm from perth originally but have been living in melbourne for the past 3 years. have a great time while you're here and dont forget to visit the west coast. it's just as interesting as the east.

I'm not quite sure where I will be going in OZ because I am just going to let fate and my budget decide on that one. I have friends in Melbourne I want to visit and one in particular is coming with me to Tasmania to do the Overland Trail. I'm very excited abotu that one. What do you recommend on the west coast?

if you have the time it's worth doing it all. but if not i would see the SW coast around margaret river and all the way down to esperance.

Digital ... when are you going to head out on your trip anyway?

If you would like, once you hit the US, if you are in Tampa Florida look us up and you can stay here for a night or two, help you save some cash.... although you have to be here before August 20th or so ... as that is when we plan to take off on our trip round the world.

I spent $15 on my RTW trip, which lasted 13 months and I went the the following countries: Guatemala, Belieze, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador (& Galapagos), Chile, Arg, Thailand, & Malaysia.

I recommend you budget between $1,000 and $1,500 per month. I spent $700/mo in SEA and dropped $2500 in Ecuador (The first 5 days were $1,000 - the Galapagos, a must do!)

I didn't skimp on food, but stayed in some shady hostels. If you do buy a Pacsafe for your backpack.
