This is Laila in a lake in eastern Massachusetts. She lives with her dad (the guy in the canoe) and three cats across the state line in New York.

I love dogs!!

These photos are from Borneo: these are hunting dogs from the Iban Longhouses. Highly intelligent dogs!

This dog is named Princess, and she was the pet of the family whose guest house I stayed at in San Ignacio, Belize last year.

This is a pure bred Tibetan mastiff from Tibet. This dog is only 6 months old. When he is full grown he will weigh around 160lbs.

last summer studying in ankara, aroud the METU campus, the strays were VICIOUS. big nasty fellas, too. interesting that they were so friendly in fethiye.

i would say that, on average, dogs are cooler than people.

Saw this dog nursing her puppies 2 nights ago in Ko Pha Ngan. This was in the middle of the street too.




And then there was this big guy chillin with a donkey in Morocco. Not far from the the Todra Gorge.

I didn't have any problems in Istanbul either - in most places I've been with strays, including India, they are more afraid of people than anything else. I've found that if I leave them alone they don't bother me.

In Turkey, it could also be connected to the neuter and return programs - in Fethiye and Istanbul there are relatively well organized programs, and neutering dogs makes them less territorial and (partly because of that)less agressive. It also does actually help control the stray population much more efficively than other methods used in the past, or in some countries still.

You can buy dried pigs ears here as dog treats, he just wanted a fresh one. The pig didn't seem to mind.
