Hey everyone -- have you heard of the fairly new RTW/Vagabonding documentary out there called A Map For Saturday? The writer/director, Brooks Silva-Braga, sent me a review copy, and I wrote about it here:

http://www.gadling.com/2007/05/23/movie-review-a-map-for-saturday/

The review doesn't actually go live until tomorrow, but I figured I'd give you guys a sneak peak.

The movie is really, really well done. Check it out.

Pretty cool.... and it worked out well for him because he's going to be able to profit off the trip with sales from the DVDs, interviews, etc. Thumbs Up My question is how long was he working at his production job before he left? And did he just get sick of it one day and decided to leave, or did he just get inspired while staring at a book "Hmm maybe next year I'll quit my job and go around the world and make a documentary of it and try to sell it"?

You know, Mike, I don't know -- but I will be interviewing him in June, so I will add that to my list of questions to ask.

I have a feeling he worked for HBO for a while, though -- especially considering he was a producer, and he won an Emmy. That doesn't seem like something that would happen without a lot of time invested. But you never know, I guess...

I watched the trailer and instantly ordered the DVD, it looks excellent so I'm really looking forward to getting it. I knew I had seen it with Gadling somewhere, don't know how I managed to get to the page before it was in my feed, but anyway.

Very cool can't wait to see it. I really liked the docu. a while back about the one that some guy went on with his dad, I can't remember the title at the moment.

Yes, that looks genuine. Wonder if it interests anybody though - or will it just be preaching to the converted?

It looks cool, I personally think the backpacker in his 70's is the more interesting of the lot -- young hippie backpackers are a dime of a dozen hehee..

in response to elAdi's question, I think this documentary could appeal to the fence-sitters.. those who dream of travelling but don't dare because they feel tied to their lives back home. It's one thing to read travelogues, and get involved with forums like this, for a lot of people, documentaries can be very powerful so who knows.. good luck with the guy who made this!

Wow, that trailer looks awesome. I just ordered it. We are in the initial stages of planning our first RTW, and the trailer just gave me goosebumps. Thanks for the heads up on this. We've been reading and reading and reading and reading some more. It's gonna be nice to kick back, relax, and watch something like this.

Well I'll let you know if it changes my mind about anything. I'm planted pretty firmly on that fence (ouch). I've worked pretty hard my whole life to get where I am and really couldn't imagine walking away from it mainly because I fear I'll lose my hard fought lead in the rat race.

Wow - watching that from work makes me so nostalgic! I ordered a copy too. I can't wait to see it.

I have a feeling this is the type of film I can watch whenever I'm feeling anxious or uncertain about whether to take the time off to travel.

Thanks for the link!

This is EXACTLY the kind of thing the travel community needs. Enough of the bloated "Travel Channel" BS. Let's get some real stuff going.

It's funny seeing this thread here. I've been in contact with the director of the video of the past two weeks as I'm gearing up to create an actual backpacker TV show.

We need more of this. Lot's more.
