If you choose the public transport option I would suggest catching the train from Brisbane Central to Nerang Station. Then bus route no. 22 to Surfers Paradise.Trains depart every 30 minutes and are half price on weekends, they were when I was there .
Time table example : dep. Brisbane 9.56 arr. Nerang 11.03. Nerang Station bus departs 11.10 arr. Surfers Paradise 11.34am at Beach Road. On weekdays Bus Roster Number is 191,192 193 and 194. On Saturdays they are 491,492,493 and 494. Sundays are 791,792,793, and 794.

at Coach Terminal Level 3 Roma Street Transit Centre. Ther is a bus departs 10.30am arriving Surfers at 12 noon. Fare is around AUD$22.00 for backpacker rate.
Surfers Paradise to Byron Bay using McCafferty's (Greyhound) Bus Lines. For example, depart Surfers at 12 noon , arrive Byron Bay at 14.15pm. Fare is AUD$27.00 backpacker rate.
From Byron Bay to Sydney I would suggest Countrylink. There is a daylight service and a night service, both cost the same. Having travelled on Countrylink several times , I would recommend the daylight service, more comfortable. Cost is AUD$66.00 adult, yoiu may be able to get a backpacker rate, I'm not sure.
