Anyone on BnA been cycling around Tasmania (or Tassy, if you prefer)? If so, would be interested to hear stories and maybe pick your brain a bit...

Won't be getting around to doing it for quite a while though. But will look forward to checking out your trip report on your website. Was checking out your Munda Biddi cycling trip a few months back.

It'll probably be at the end of the year though...Tasmania doesn't seem to be a place I want to cycle in winter.

Yeah, Munda Biddi was cool. I contacted them recently on the second stage...and they said, it should open at the end of 2007. So, that's always an option for a two to three weeks trip as well.

I haven't cycled tassie but spent a few months there. You must go to Maria Island. It's a little island/wildlife refuge with some old convict buildings but no cars and lots of wildlife. Great place to travel around by bicylce and camp. Otherwise alot of the roads in Tassie seemed to be narrow and not well paved. I spent a bit of time all over tas on the side of the road waiting for rides and didn't see a single bicyclist, so....

I'm not worried about badly paved roads. As a matter of fact, I'm a mountain biker, more than a roadie...and guess what, there's a mountain bike tour in Tasmania. Yay.

So, the plan quickly evolved to doing half of it on the road and the other half on the trail.

Went to Tassie April '04 and loved it! While it's true many of the highways are very winding I found them to be in pretty nick- except for the highway between Tarana and Port Arthur. Also there is no lighting on that one.

Pretty much ALL areas of Tassie are scenically beautiful. Cradle Mountain is a "must"- it's so completely awesome! We travelled via Sheffield along Lake Barrington. I'd also recommend Tasmazia on Staverton Road, Promised Land. Yes. there really IS a place called that, there is also the Village of Lower Crackpot, Nowhere Else and Paradise.

If your'e going far NW check out Stanley and the "Nut" and further on there is (sorry forgot the place name) which is said to have the cleanest air in the world.

Lake St. Clair Nat. Park is great. Also check out Mole Creek and the caves- there's Marrakoopa (wet) and King Solomon(dry).

In the SW lies the Huon Valley and the Tahune Airwalk, breathtaking scenery all national forests. Also go to the top oh Mt. Wellington which overlooks Hobart and gives you a 360 degree for about 100 kms.

Sorry this is so long, but whenever I plan a holiday, I start my research about 18 months beforehand and get one of those loose leaf holders students use and fill it with lots and lots of cutouts and info plus my own pictures etc. All I have to do is pull it out of the bookcase and Voila!
