I'm very interested in TEFL in Mexico or Central or South America. I'm *almost* fluent in Spanish and I'll have a year off from school (there is a waiting list for the nursing program at my school) after this semester.
My son is 3 1/2 so would not yet NEED to be enrolled in school, but I've looked at a couple schools, such as American School Foundation, that enroll pre-k and also aren't TOO expensive, I don't think.
I'm just wondering if it's even possible to do TEFL with a child and no spouse, or if it would be unreasonable and frustrating. Have any of you attempted to do this?

I think it would be difficult and challenging, though not impossible to both do a TEFL course and a TEFL job in Latin America as a single mother. First, TEFL courses are demanding...a lot of work crunched into a short period of time. Second, while it reduces your costs by not needing schooling for your child as yet, you'll have additional costs related to child care or health care.

Entry level teaching jobs (I am making an assumption here that this would be your first exposure to teaching) does not pay very well anywhere in Latin America. Unless you're willing to fund much of your time and expenses from a source other than the teaching pay, you may have a hard time making ends meet.

If you feel you can do it, then Mexico might be your best bet as you would earn the highest pay here based on your choices of Central or South America.
