Have a great time!

I won't go into the normal tourist things in Amsterdam. They're well covered elsewhere.

I recommend you take a train to Haarlem, a smaller dutch city, much more representative than Amsterdam. Also, visit Rembranthouse, the Rembrant museum.

The Van Gogh museum is interesting, but more for its range of pictures that represent the life of Van Gogh, not so much for the quality of art in the place. I liked it a lot.

People seem to like the Amstel brewery. The flower market is always charming, especially for women. I like the large chess set at Max Eewe Plein myself.

Oh, red light district. Some like it. I went once, but found the public urinals more exciting in terms of possibilities. They have a new kind of public Urinal there I want to see as well. It sinks into the ground during the day, and goes into action at night.

If you can, take a tour of the canal from the boatside view. I found it very interesting, indeed.

I and my wife had a wonderful vocation in Amsterdam in November because the holiday season starts early here with the arrival of Sinterklaas in mid-November -the city already feels festive. However, Amsterdam weather is consistently inconsistent so you should prepare an umbrella for rain, even if the sun is out when you start your day. And the Van Gogh museum is so great. We love this city.

I just got back from Amsterdam about a week ago.

- Rent a bike. It is awesome to see the city by bike. And you feel like a local
- Visit the Anne Frank house (and read the book if you haven't already)
- I went to Haarlem and found it charming. Unless you're really into his art, you don't need to go to the museum there (gosh, I cannot remember the name). I am not truly a believer that small towns are more culturally relevant, but it was nice to get out of the hustle and bustle of A'dam. And it is a really quick ride.
- I have heard taking a canal cruise is a must. My friends that live there told me this, too, I just didn't have time
- I enjoyed the Heineken brewery...but I like beer. I wouldn't say it is a must, but it is interesting.
- I do NOT recommend the free tours provided by the tourist office. They are disorganized and those running the show were very rude
- DRESS WARM. It was already really cold a week ago...and be prepared for rain. It rained almost the entire time I was there
- All the bars I went to had a wide selection of Belgium beers that I have never seen in the US. They were awesome.
- I didn't step foot in a coffeehouse. The red light is worth a trip walking around, but I don't know that you need to stay much longer.
- I enjoyed just toodling around. It was fun getting lost and finding my way back to center (just follow the canals).

Enjoy yourself!

For something different, try the houseboat museum and the photo (foam) museum. They are great and not something most tourists see!

Moreover, the city history museum has amazing information

and visit the jordaan area- nice and local and filled with amazing cafes
