I'm wanting to do a walk from St Peters Square to Trastevere, stopping at Passeggiata del Gianicolo along the way. Has anyone walked around this area at all? Is it pretty easy to find your way around with a map or am I likely to get lost? Or can someone recommend a route?
I'm spending 3 weeks in Italy, first time overseas.

Hi, Janeea, and welcome to BootsnAll!
I did this same walk last year when I was in Rome; I had a good map that I'd bought from a newsstand (I had another Rome map, but this one had all the bus lines on it - highly recommended for any stay in Rome), but I basically walked in the direction I knew the Trastevere to be for awhile as I hunted for a lunch spot. After lunch, I ended up walking down to the Tiber River and just following it until I got to the sort of "entrance" of the Trastevere (where the bus stops). If you wanted to avoid walking along the river, you could probably do it pretty easily without a detailed map if you got going in the right direction, but if you've got specific points you want to hit along the way I would recommend getting a good map. If you'll be taking the buses in Rome , then get one of the maps the newsstands sell - it's got a great street map as well as bus stops marked.
I hope you have a great trip, and let me know if you've got any more questions!

A map will make it easier but possible to do it without, provided you roughly know what direction things are. I always found the Italians more than willing to help with directions and I don't speak Italian.

As I walking down Viale Di Trastevere this afternoon I passed the Standa Supermarket, which we frequent a decent amount seeing as how close it is to our apartment. Anyways, every time that I pass this supermarket, and I mean every single time, I see the same homeless man. He actually seems quite nice. Every time I pass him I give a nice smile and surprisingly he smiles back, unlike the other Italians I have smiled at. What a moment!

When I was in Rome, we wandered all over with little or no maps and it was fine. It's a good city for "getting lost" because there's lots of interesting stuff to see and landmarks that let you know where you've ended up.

i walked all over rome too...no maps either. it's a totally doable walk. you'll get there if you just head south. getting lost is half the fun. trastevere is one of the best areas in rome too!
