Warning: Duty Free Scam at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport

Postby DakLak » July 12th, 2009

Earlier this year two UK tourists were falsely accused of shoplifting at a King Power duty-free outlet at Suvarnabhumi Airport, in 2009 April that is hitting the headlines.

The Sunday Times reported, < http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/w ... 590584.ece >, published 2009 JUN 28, says "a British couple, who were falsely accused of shoplifting and were forced to pay UK₤8,000 in bribes to secure their release, are to take legal action for compensation."

The incident occurred at the KING POWER DUTY FREE shop.

They were bailed for Baht200,000 and had to put up at a nearby small hotel, Valentine Resort, outside the airport complex.

"It happens frequently I have seven to eight of them recently," said the hotel owner which suggests it might be an ongoing racket at the new airport.

So if you are travelling through Suvarnabhumi International Airport make a wide tour around KING POWER DUTY FREE!

King power released this video of the pair, where it appears that the woman shoplifts

The extortion after the arrest is maybe out of king powers' control.

I find King power prices far from duty free though.

I could have sworn i already commented on this. It is very obvious the couple were guilty.
Do not come to Thailand to steal, unlike in Farangland, the penalties here are must stricter - not just a smack on the wrist with a "Dont do it again", here you can get a nasty prison sentence. The couple can count themselves lucky.

As Monkey wrote, whatever happened next, is nothing to do with King Power.

Yes, the video was pretty clear that she shop-lifted, and that he was aware of it. God, I hate shoplifters, because of them, I get trailed around by shop assistants in Asia who are waiting for me to steal something.

Yet another incident has been reported:

If you assume the King Power video was not tampered with and it shows a female committing the offence why would the man be arrested?

The police searched them at the scene and found nothing untoward.

In any case the fact that the shops can impose a financial penalty, without trial, obviously encourages false accusations with the proceeds going to staff.

Power King initiated the complaint, the police search revealed no goods, the prosecutor concurred and permitted the couple to leave. Ergo, Power King's complaint was unfounded.

The whole matter started with Power King and it must be obvious to avoid similar situations (and getting charged high prices - check the guidebooks) SKIP Power King and catch your flight on time.
