Hi all,

I'm spending some extended time in Colima and am looking for weekend trips nearby. I've been to one fantastic beach in Michoacan but need help with other possible weekend or day trips. I speak Spanish, so that's not a problem, but I don't have a car. Happy to rent one if the occasion warrants it, or take a bus.

Any suggestions for nearby cities or outdoor adventures that avoid touristy areas? Not looking for resorts, but not looking for super low-budget accommodations either.

You could go to Barra de Navidad and San Patricio, just north of you.

For something other than the beach, head up to Tapalpa. It's a great little mountain town. Definitely gets some tourists, but mostly people from Guadalajara (and Colima). Lots of outdoor stuff to do, and it's just a cool little town. Don't miss the giant rocks set out in a valley about, maybe, four miles from town. (If that.) It's only a few hours from Colima, so it'd be an easy weekender. You could probably catch a bus through Sayula and on up to Tapalpa if there isn't direct service. But I bet there is.

I've heard amazing things about Maruata, in Michoacan.
