What happened to my blog?!!

Postby Seaward » September 21st, 2006

Is anyone else having trouble accessing their blog? Mine appears to be... GONE!!! I tried logging in, and now it says there's "no such user name"! My goodness, if I could only count the hours I've spend using my blog to plan my upcoming trip... my goodness, I really hope it's not gone for good. Did my IT Department go all Big Brother on me, or is anyone else having problems with their blog?! HELP!!

What are tags?

G'day Christine,

We have had a series of server errors and the database that was storing all the blog entries was wiped clean. The most recent back-up that we've been able to restore is from August 17th. All our daily back-ups between August 17th and now are missing for the moment.

We are still working on finding a more recent back-up.

In the meantime, you can look for your blog posts by searching google for them. Paste http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:blogs.bootsnall.com/ChristineHind/ into a web browser. You should see most (if not all) of your entries listed and cached. You can copy and paste the text of each into a new entry and back-date it.

Again, we are very sorry about this inconvenience - let us know if you need any help.

AARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!! Frown Mad Eek

I want to throw up! I too have spent hours on my blog, trying to find internet connections on the road and uploading tons of pictures!! Luckily I still have most of my posts on my hard drive (minus the pictures), but I don't have time to redo everything the way it was.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do everything you can to solve this and restore our lost entries.

BTW, I tried your search option and nothing comes up.
Carpe diem!

The photos from all your posts have not been lost. We do have those and we're creating a page with a list of all images uploaded since August.

I also looked for your entries on Yahoo instead of google and I found them here.

Hi there, don't want to be yet another person who is distraught, but I can't find my entries either. Are you saying you will restore all the entries lost? I am freaking out, and I am leaving the western world in a very short time. HELP!

Hi JessieLynn,

Here are your cached entries that you can copy and paste into your blog again and back date them to the correct dates.

Yahoo seems to have a much more thorough and recent cache of my site than Google. Others may want to scour it for missing posts of theirs. Thanks for the suggestion, Chris.

Ack... yeah, so I just discovered the missing entries... I found them all in the cache, but do I have to reload everything now? The text itself is no problem, but will I have to reupload any photos?

Oh, though I did have some saved and not yet published entries I was working on... how's it looking for them to be recoverable?

Incidently, how often do you schedule server backups? Just curious...

Phew!

Like most of you, I didn't have a backup copy on my hard drive of hardly any of my site, but I didn't end up losing any posts or pictures. The site is a little screwed up, but I subscribed to my own RSS feed a while back and have all of my posts safe and sound in Google Reader.

I would strongly encourage all of you booties to do the same with your own blogs, because it takes 10 seconds and will totally alleviate the panic you feel when this kind of thing happens. No offense to any of the admin guys, but chances are it'll happen again, and the RSS feed seems like a good form of redundancy.

Good luck to everyone else trying to salvage their posts.

C.J.

As mentioned in an eariler post, the images are safe and sound. They do not have to be uploaded again and we'll soon have a page where you can find the images that were uploaded in this missing time frame.

if you don't want to wait and you're comfortable looking at the source code of your cached pages, you can extract the image code from those pages and paste them into your 'new' entries.

Click on the 'View' menu of your browser, click 'view source' and you'll see all the html that nakes up your page. Hunt through to find the image you want and copy the code from there into your blog.

Ok, cool. I guess what I was more curious about was, will photos have the same URL as before the way things stand now, but from what I understand, that's yes...

Ok, found all my entries from Aug 17 to Sep 14th, so still missing sep 15th on. Used Google search cache -- thank you loads and heaps Chris! Is there anyone who knows how to find the entries from the last 5 days or so?
