Independant ("indie") travel is a broad category that basically just means organising your own trip and not buying a pre-packaged arrangement from a travel agent or tour company. There's lots of other things that aren't strictly speaking required to be "indie" travel, but are often assumed when you're discussing it:
- a medium-to-tight budget, and the hostels/cheap guesthouses/street food that go with it
- use of public transport (or bicycles or some other option that doesn't involve renting a car)
- a sense of adventure and wanting to get out and do something "different" with your trip
Basically, it's a slightly enlarged version of what used to be called "backpacking." There's lots of subcategories within independant travel, which we can delve into if you want:
- volunteer travel
- Round-the-World travel
- bicycle touring
- overlanding
- leave-home-for-decades-with-$100-to-your-name
- slow travel (staying in each destination for weeks or months at a time)
and so on...

OK I get it now, it's essentially backpacker travel that we all came to BNA to find out about but geared to the type of traveler that needs to peruse never-ending 10 best lists to figure things out.
In other words way too much frivolous info that leads to over-planning.

Wait, I thought we came to BNA to get too much frivolous info and over-plan. It's kind of our schtick around here.

We're still figuring out exactly what it means too, but here is our attempt: Indie Travel is...
