What is the cheapest way fly to Eastern/Southern Africa...

Postby LindsatBackpackerDaily » October 18th, 2009

Hey guys...

My husband and I are doing a RTW trip in June. Because of the money, we've put Africa on the back burner. Is there any way to get to Tanzania/Kenya cheaply? Sometimes if you fly from a specific city, you can get a cheaper rate than flying from any other city.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I know that we could sail to Morocco from Spain, and then travel by land, but I think that might take too much time, money, and I hear the travel conditions might not be that great. However, if it's possible to take a flight from the northwestern part of Africa to places like Tanzania, Kenya, or even to South Africa...we might be interested in doing that.

I think that overlanding from Morocco would end up being significantly more expensive, but that's just a hunch. Also, if you want to see all of those countries as well it might be worth it. How much time do you have?

I had lots of luck with KLM - Royal Dutch Airlines. They have some sort of deal with Northwest: they're all part of the same alliance/same company or something. So if you happen to be in Amsterdam somewhere along the way the cheapest flight to Tanzania would probably be out of Schipol. The additional good news is that if you don't have any reason to be in Dar Es Salaam, KLM also goes directly to Kilimanjaro (Arusha and Moshi.) If you want to see Kenya as well as Tanzania that might be the way to go.

Finally, the good news is that the majority of the money you'll be spending is on the ticket. Once you're there, it is REALLY cheap to get around that area of Africa. You can take buses and minvans all the way down from Arusha to Dar, take a ferry to Zanzibar, then continue south via bus or minibus. Things get a little slow (but even cheaper) in Malawi, but if you've got time, that's the way to go.

You're doing a RTW trip. Putting Africa on the back burner is, in my mind a big mistake. When else are you going to go? Good luck with your planning!
