I am curious as to what MBTI type most travellers are here...

http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp

I'm an INTJ. I think the fact I'm a curious guy who likes to learn helps me be motivated to travel. I'm leaving for a rtw backpacking trip in about a week.

Anyway, I have a theory that most ppl who are into backpacking and travelling, have a type that somehow drives their motivations.

I am an INFP - a typical dreamer. The I part is the part of me that allows me to be independent than some; the F means that I am prone to following my heart more than my head at time, the N part is the part of me that trusts me inner instinct and guidance, and the P part of me is the part that let's me go with the flow.

"INFPs never seem to lose their sense of wonder. One might say they see life through rose-colored glasses. It's as though they live at the edge of a looking-glass world where mundane objects come to life, where flora and fauna take on near-human qualities."

Maybe that's why you like travel...? ;)

Interesting theory. I'm an INTJ, so I guess that provides some additional support for your idea. I would think that a lot of travelers would be extroverted (E) rather introverted (I).

For the MBTI, here's what the I and E mean:

Extraversion (E)
I like getting my energy from active involvement in events and having a lot of different activities. I’m excited when I’m around people and I like to energize other people. I like moving into action and making things happen. I generally feel at home in the world. I often understand a problem better when I can talk out loud about it and hear what others have to say.

The following statements generally apply to me:

* I am seen as “outgoing” or as a “people person.”
* I feel comfortable in groups and like working in them.
* I have a wide range of friends and know lots of people.
* I sometimes jump too quickly into an activity and don’t allow enough time to think it over.
* Before I start a project, I sometimes forget to stop and get clear on what I want to do and why.

Introversion (I)
I like getting my energy from dealing with the ideas, pictures, memories, and reactions that are inside my head, in my inner world. I often prefer doing things alone or with one or two people I feel comfortable with. I take time to reflect so that I have a clear idea of what I’ll be doing when I decide to act. Ideas are almost solid things for me. Sometimes I like the idea of something better than the real thing.

The following statements generally apply to me:

* I am seen as “reflective” or “reserved.”
* I feel comfortable being alone and like things I can do on my own.
* I prefer to know just a few people well.
* I sometimes spend too much time reflecting and don’t move into action quickly enough.
* I sometimes forget to check with the outside world to see if my ideas really fit the experience.

It's common to have INTJs on forums...we think internally and like discussing ideas and also doing research for knowledge.

What's weird is that social scientists say that 75% of the people in the world are Extroverted and only 25% are introverted and yet people here are overwhelmingly self-reporting as being among that 25% of the population. I know that my mom was definitely an ISTJ and she traveled extensively (~82 countries). Maybe people who lean towards being a little introverted are more prone to self-reflect, think outside of the box, be independent and perhaps be a little less conforming than Extraverts. I also have to say that I actually have a good number of friends but actually spend most of my time alone and it is easy for me to feel a little lonely--even though I totally understand that loneliness has NOTHING to do with BEING ALONE. I know that when I was on safari in Africa this past summer I totally did not feel alone and felt very alive and blessed. But when I stopped at a conference in Spain on the way back from Africa, I actually felt a little lonely. That drove me crazy--it was like I didn't feel lonely with the wildlife but once I was with people that spoke English and was with people with whom I felt I should very much should have felt a part of, I found myself feeling rather disconnected... A lot of people just don't seem to understand me anyway... A lot of people seem to make big deals out of things that don't seem like big deals to me and they don't have interest in the things that seem really important to me, like travel.... I was asked once what people did when they were on safari... When I explained it, they asked why??? I was dumbfounded.

I am an ISTJ. I had a whole big career profile done two years ago when trying to make sense of some confusion in my career after my RTW. Strangely, my career interest in another test was Artistic, which does not gel well with ISTJs, so, really, did not help my confusion whatsoever.

Another weird thing was, I took the Myers Briggs in 2001, where I scored an INTP. 7 years later after working and taking almost two years for a RTW, I tested as a ISTJ. Not sure what that means, just interesting.

The beauty and curse of being an introvert. I am wondering if you've read more about the MBTI since you articulate everything so well about introversion vs extroversion.

INTP to ISTJ seems like a huge jump. Have you tried reading the descriptions of each? Which do you think fits you better?
