I usually have one tote as my "purse," and carry the stuff below, but I also try to carry-on my other bag. I don't pack a lot of stuff since I usually travel by myself, and really don't carry if I wear the same basic outfits over and over (I do wash them!). Smile So shampoo and stuff like that I keep in my larger bag/carry-on.

Passport
Travel journal/pens
Rx and ibuprofen
Cold-eeze (I never travel w/out this stuff)
Vitamins
Cell phone/charger
Digital camera/memory cards, etc.
As many books as I can cram in. I read fast, and usually go through 2-3 books on a long flight.
Sunglasses
Wallet
Clip-on book light
Gum
Bottle of water
Reading glasses (several pairs)
Hand cream
Lip balm
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Makeup
iPod and accessories
Other travel documents (i.e., ticket, boarding pass)
Guidebooks and/or phrase books
Maps

Gosh, people really take a lot with them.

* passport
* airline tickets
* wallet
* nice book

The rest goes in my suitcase. On the shorter trips I'll bring by suitcase on board (because it's small enough), but I'll never open it for anything.

There's still time to change the road you're on....

I bought a pack small enough to ensure if I'm on a true backpacking trip, everything I'm bringing fits carry-on baby!

I mostly do it out of fear the airlines will lose my stuff, however it makes getting out of the airport easier too.
