Going to Japan in late March 2009 for about a week. Would love to spend more time there, but a week is all I can spare.
I'm traveling on-the-cheap, couchsurfing and staying in hostels. I'm a city boy and a Japanese cinema lover, so I'm pumped to see Tokyo and Shinjuku. Also planning to get over to Kyoto at some point.
For those of you who have been through Japan, what are some "must see's" or "must do's"?

What to do with a week in Japan?

Hi
I went to Japan a couple of years back and did Tokyo and Kyoto. Here is a trip report with pictures and links http://gardkarlsen.com/japan_tokyo.htm . Maybe you can find some useful info there :-)

Thanks Gard, I'm only halfway through your report but it sounds like you had a great time! I'll definitely lift some destinations from your report

I thought Nikko was a cool city...it is the city of temples and shrines...you need to take a train to get there which isn't that cheap but was a lot of fun...also try and check out a baseball game at the tokyo dome. You can get the cheapest seats at like 11 or 12 USD or standing room for the same price...it is a great experience and the japanese love their baseball..i saw the tokyo giants play...
Josh and Nicole aren't going anywhere for a while, but you can still read about their past trips herehttp://blogs.bootsnall.com/eppyboy

Thanks for that reminder Josh, seeing the Yomiyuri Giants play was on my list from waaaay back but I'd forgotten about it. Writing it down again -- cheers!

My husband and I are planning a trip there about the same time and there is a big sumo tournament in Osaka that goes March 13-29th I think. It sounds like you can get tickets pretty easily without advance purchase.

Half the fun of the travel is the esthetic of lostness.
