Did someone mention Rotten-rua? Stinky!!!

Though, I have to say, for a man made stench, I vote for Ulan Bataar. Smelled like an open sewer that had been sitting in the sun for 2 weeks. My close second would be Jodhpur, India. Not toilet funk, but the air was so rank with pollution that you could practically part it in front of you.

Taipei. Night market. Stinky tofu.

It's fermented tofu that's fried and smells like a garbage dump coated in rotten eggs. Just vile. Get within 20 feet of a stand, and you want to vomit

The Chatalet Metro station in Paris. It's like walking through a urinal.

Tainan, in Taiwan. Quite apart from the stinky tofu, on wind-still days a thick blanket of smog lingers over the town. When I was there it was so bad that I couldn't eat in the open air...

Mui Ne, Vietnam. Nothing like the smell of fish sauce being made!

I'll put the NYC's subway stations, middle of summer 95 degree heat with 85% humidity...if you haven't witnessed it, your missing out on an unforgettable stench.

I would say khandahar, afghanistan is the stinkiest, i remember doing patrols through the dirt streets there and some guy would be shitting in the middle of the road, semi colon you in the military and what branch if you are. I plan on doing a rtw trip for around 9-10 months after my contract is up in october.

Bristol, Pennsylvania.

I don't know what it's like today, but I remember dreading crossing the Burlington-Bristol Bridge as a kid -- there was something in the air that made your eyes water and made you want to throw up. It was always there.

A public toilet in Xian near the antique market -didn't even have to go in, you could smell it from outside.
Having said that, I loved China. I could handle Rotorua, but I was extremely traumatised by this particular toilet.

a brothel in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia

I was dragged in there because of a bar fight that had broken out into the street and bottles were being thrown. I felt the hands of several women pull me inside. I appreciated the safe haven but it was truly horrific. The odor was beyond anything a description would do justice for. I tried describing it once as taking all of the dirtiest strip clubs in America and condensing it into one building and even then there was room for more vile impurities.
