Not Kyoto. You'd have to cross the island to get there from here.

HINT: This place is an alleged global superlative in one category.

I don't want this to be the one that killed WITP.

It's Hōshi Ryokan in the Awazu Onsen area of Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. Founded in 718, it is the world's oldest hotel still in operation according to the Guinness Book of World Records and the world's oldest continuously operating company after the liquidation of Kongō Gumi in 2006. The hotel has been operated by the same family for forty-six generations.

The board's open!

You're thinking along the right lines and in the right country, but no cigar and no more than a single DING for getting India.

So we are in India and at a shrine. That limits it to 156,000,000 possibilities. That's not worth 2 DINGS?

Ok then, are we in Dharamsala or was I better off pursuing the Bohdi tree link?

You've named places on either side of this. Some claim something happened here millenia ago while others refute that.

Is it related to Buddha's enlightenment at all? Is the pool more important than the tree?

Not enlightenment, something earlier than that.
