Hi all!

I'm thinking about my next trip (as always!), and I'm leaning towards cycle touring.

So far, I'm considering France and Spain. Has anyone cycled these two countries? I consider myself to be a pretty savvy traveller, so I'm not worried about safety. I'm more worried about crowds! I've never done any major travelling in Europe, and everyone seems to be telling me that the hostels are packed in the summer. Do I really have to book all my accommodation in advance? I'm afraid that that will cramp my style. What about camping? Is it necessary to pre-book tent space?

And most importantly: is there a problem with dogs in France and Spain? I'm terrified of the buggers, and many countries on my list have already been scratched because people have told me about a "dog problem" (China, Greece, Central America). If France and Spain also have dog problems...can anyone suggest ANY country that is relatively dog-safe? I have no problems with dogs that stay put, or nice friendly dogs with their owners...but getting chased and nipped at scares the s*** out of me.

Anyway, I know that this board isn't used very often, but on the off-chance that someone checks it out, I'd love to hear what you have to say!

Ive done both France and Spain and France has many more options for side trips to Switzerland /Belgium/Italt etc. Also France has aot more respect for cyclists.

anyone who has gone from north America into Europe or asia biking?? please email me. I'm already planning my 2003 2004 adventures..

Cycling is popular in Europe and I have enjoyed support of locals in various places. I cycled from southern Germany through the Champagne-Ardennes region of France to the coast and the scenery was very pretty. If you want to see the Germany and Frnace you imagine cycling will give it to you. I remember passing thorugh small rural villages with a few farms, a couple of shops, the garage and cafe. One thing I enjoyed about going to the cafes was that upon entering everyone would say 'bonjour monsieur' . How cool I thought. I found people in both countries to be into bicycles and supportiveof a traveller on a bike. In Germany I was introduced to a fellowwho owned a bike store and he let me wander through his store room picking up parts I wanted and let me use his tools.

In France I slept in various farmer's barns and often was given encouragement and water etc. I stayed at a pension just outside Strasbourg and it was cool. Friendly homely proprietors who cooked huge meals. The room was something like $10. Definitely check out the pensions.

I never had trouble with dogs.

There were occasions where I had to cycle by the side of the freeway, but usually I was able to cruise country lanes. I'd definitely do it again and its important to give yourself enough time in the day to enjoy the stuff that isn't cycling.
