Figure out the best place to stay on Khao San Road in Bangkok and where to escape when you've had enough of the mayhem. From Singapore Slings to the changes in Bejing after the 2008 Olympics, gab about it all here.

Where to stay in Calcutta?

I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive backpacker hostel/guesthouse type place in Calcutta where I can stay for a couple nights.

Ideally, somewhere that can be booked online.

Even more ideally: near the Park Street Cemetery/Mother Teresa House area.

Any suggestions or recommendations welcome. Thank you!!

(Oh, and... I'm planning to go in the first week of April. I understand it will be swelteringly hot!!)

Hi there. I stayed in the Hotel Maria on Sudder St. I don't know what you are used to but for Kolkatta its a good enough place. I found it clean and comfortable and the friends I met that were staying nearby didn't have it nearly as good! Its simple of course but with western style toilets and running water and no cockroaches that I saw, with high ceilings and a nice vibe, it was a place to call home for the two weeks I was there and I enjoyed it. 300 rupees a night for a double room when I was there two years ago. Also volunteered at Missionaries of Charity. And the Park Street Cemetary was probably my favorite place in Kolkatta! Loved it! Spent many an afternoon there just having a walk through. That city (and the country) have a place in my heart and I loved it so much, but it is definitly its own world. Any questions about anything feel free to PM me! Hope you love it, too!

At Rs. 16,000/night it's not exactly a backpacker's hostel...

now it must be doubled or at least Rs 500 per night. But I think that is quite affordable. You won't get much deals less then this in good hotels.

I stayed in the Salvation Army Hostel. I forget how much I paid, but it was a hostel. One huge room with a very tall ceiling and lots of bunkbeds. I had a great time there, though it was in june, maybe july, and both hot and humid to the extreme. I found my best times going down to the beach at night, where every night is a family party night, cooled by ocean breezes.

I never did see the cemetary area. Perhaps I should check it out next time. The reality is it was so hot I was usually prostrated from walking more than 500 yards in the 103 degree heat and 100% humidity.
But I did meet some great people from all over India, including Sikkim, and that made it worth the while, not counting visiting the vivikenanda institute, which is based in Calcutta, I believe. Their exhibit is marvelous.

Ended up staying at Hotel Pushpak, 10 Kyd Street, in the Sudder Street area. A/C dorm bed Rs. 300/night. Beds are pretty private too - they have curtains. (Bring earplugs, of course)
