Me and four others are planning a trip to NYC. We will arrive in La Guardia Airport.
We need a place to stay that will average to $30-40/night a person if possible. No dorms, they want a decent hotel. I know staying within city is expensive. Is our only option to stay in New Jersey? Anything close to a subway so we can take it to get into town?
Any help is appreciated!

Where to stay NYC?

A lot of it depends on your budget and the time of year you are going. Hotels in NYC are very expensive. You can stay pretty much anywhere in Midtown, Manhattan, Central Park & the Upper East Side. There are various hotels and accommodations are available in these areas based on your budget.

Niagara Falls Hotels
As the OP clearly gave a $30-40/day/p budget, this is just another SPAM post, guess Marriott hotels are falling on hard times

I'm a bit unclear on your requirements. How many rooms are you looking for? What constitutes a "decent hotel"?

There are a lot of new hotels in Long Island City, Queens (ZIP codes 11101-11105). A lot of them are in pretty underserved neighborhoods (not many stores, etc) that seem somewhat abandoned at times. On the other hand, they're only a couple of minutes from Manhattan by subway (and not far by bike, either). They're also close enough to LGA that it will annoy your taxi driver.

Staying in NJ is not a viable option to save money. Jersey City and Hoboken hotels are convenient, but not cheap. Suburbs along bus/train lines might be cheaper, but will take a while to get into the city.
I found some decent places that weren't too expensive before for social media contacts, but I can't remember where. Just have to go through various sites as they'll have different hotels. Also try using Google Maps and clicking through the hotels that show up. Sometimes you get a nice deal. Not sure if you'll find much in your price range though.

As a group of five people, AirBnB and Couchsurfing won't be options for you. Pennsylvania Hotel, across from Madison Square Garden, is probably the cheapest big hotel in Manhattan that doesn't rent by the hour. If the five of you squeeze into two rooms, you can probably manage for $200/night total.

I need those tips, too! I've been planning on a vacation on NYC! I knew it would be expensive, thanks for the advice here!

I've recently checked out Q4, in Long Island City (Queens). It's just across the river from Midtown Manhattan, a great bargain, and has a friendly crowd. Also, Aloft Hostel in Brooklyn (they say it's in East Williamsburg, but it is much more Bushwick than Williamsburg) is excellent if you'd rather be in Brooklyn, but expensive for a hostel.

I would definitely call before turning up anywhere. In addition to a lot of serious damage from that bitch Sandy, there are a lot of displaced people and volunteers in availible hotels.
Long Island City came out of it pretty well as did Bushwick; however, you might want to put off that trip to Coney Island or Rockaway Beach for a while unless you turn up with a shovel.

We stayed in North Bergen, NJ at a hotel and got it at a fairly decent rate, and it was an alright hotel. It was located really close to a bus stop, where we were able to take a $2 bus ride right into NYC, and get on the subway from there. If you're looking to save a bit of money, I would recommend this! I'm sure there are lots of other great places to stay in the city, too...but we did the NJ thing and it worked out fine!

Williamsburg and Greenpoint look unscathed too. Red Hook flooded heavily though.
