And now a question for you: How do you like the 28-135mm as your "main lens" on a 1.6x crop camera? Do you find it's not wide enough for landscapes, group shots, and so on?

I'm kind of stuck choosing between that, the 17-85mm, and a couple of others. I'd love to have the 28-135's long zoom, but losing the 17-28mm range (which is actually the 27-45mm range) concerns me a bit. I do have the 10-22mm, but there's always the draw of wanting that "all in one package" to keep from swapping lenses so much.

I use the 17-85mm for my normal use lense. i think it works great. I take more semi-wide angle pictures than zoom so that might be the reason.

I have had several digital cameras and love Canon! I had the Canon PowerShot710 with 7.1 MP and 6X optical zoom-for under $250. What a bargain! Unfortunately I had it stolen from me- I am gonna buy the G7 after much research. Still if you are on a budget I highly recomend the 710!

I'm really liking the 28-135mm lens as my one-and-only right now. I wouldn't mind adding the 17-85mm to my "collection", but right now this lens has a great range and keeps my bag a bit lighter than hauling around 2 or more lenses.

I've got a 350D and 17-40mm L as my primary lens. Still not picked up a zoom lens but all will be rectified this summer when I nip into Singapore for a few hours Smile

I ended up buying the G7 and love it! Canon rocks! I am gonna master this camera, save some money and get the 40D. The G7 would be an outstanding travel camera IMO

I'm also considering picking up two lenses, but I hadn't thought of getting something like an 18-200 to cover a lot of bases.

Any suggestions of where to buy?? I need to order online soon.

Thanks,
Katie

You are right to choose the Canon XTi,they got nice reviews.
And as far as I know the price is quite nice for $522.

On a related question:
I'm planning on buying Kathy a new DSLR for her birthday, and in balancing budget with quality, I've settled on the Digital Rebel, with the packaged 18-55 mm lens. Though she's messed around with an old film SLR a bit, we're really just moving up from a point and shoot so I don't want to go too crazy right off the bat.

My question for those who know more...is it worth the extra $300 to get the new XSi instead of the XTi?

While there seem to be lots of feature differences, the only one that I really understand is the image stabilization in the basic lens. Well, that and the recording media, but that doesn't seem a significant difference.

I am waiting on the XSi. It also has a much larger screen than the XTi, as well as live view. I do like SD better than CF.

I would wait for the XSi. The XSi has the new processor which is faster and has much better noise reduction software. The downside is that it use SD memory instead of CF but if she doesn't already have a DSLR from Canon then you don't have to worry about getting new memory anyway.

I don't know much about the new Image Stabilized lense that is coming out with it so I can't really comment on that.

I guess it just depends on whether or not you will use the extra features of the XSi over the XTi. I found a website that compares the three latest offerings and what is different between them. (XTi, 40D, XSi) I'll look for the link and repost it.

Here is a website that does a pretty good job of comparing the XTi, 40D, & XSi.

Thanks a lot. The 40D looks great, but I just can't justify the extra cost. I've put an XSi on preorder, so hopefully it will arrive in a couple of months.

We are waiting for the XSi, but that is mainly because we want the live view. I used a 40d the other day (a friends) and it was the first time in a very long time that I had not used the live view. Worth the wait for me.
