Of course, really you should visit both. And with the high-speed AVE train now serving the route between Madrid and Barcelona, the journey is quicker and easier than ever. But if you do have to choose? 8-)

Another vote for Barcelona.

Which one is better is a difficult to one to answer.

Barcelona is a bit more relaxing whereas Madrid is a more impressive city. Personally I would favor Barcelona.

I absolutely fell in love with Barcelona the first time I visited however since then, I've met a lot of people (Spaniards or otherwise) who say Madrid is a seriously much cooler city to live in.

I guess depends if it's a fleeting visit or spending some quality time. :)

I loved Barcelona so much that in the end I decided to live here!

It's all a matter of taste though, if you're more into art then you should definitely visit Madrid, home to El Prado museum. Retiro park is one of the loveliest parks I've ever visited too.

Barcelona on the other hand, as well as being an urban trip also has mountains, a beach, and a port all in one location so it's an rounded great destination. Great architecture too.

Barça, Barça, BAAAAARÇA!

Barcelona definetely. Here we have cool and clean beaches, Singing Fountains, Sagrada Familia, Parc Gaudi, A huge street full of Souvenir and animal shops (Although I think that the later have been removed now) and a market full of fresh fruit and seafood.

What do they have in Madrid? Cristiano Ronaldo?

Barcelona it's a great city, I really like Gaudi's works and Montjuic but actually I prefer Madrid, it's a big city with a lot of things to do.

Madrid.

Barcelona is great and is super flashy, but as for a city to enjoy and relax in, Madrid wins for me.

I am in love with Barcelona even if I haven't visited the city yet. However, it's my top priority in what regards traveling. So, my answer is not hard to guess: Barcelona!

Barcelona, definitely.

There's a lot more art, a lot more attractions, beach and lots of nearby attractions.

Barcelona is also more expensive. Smaller, but still a very big city.

Madrid is more elegant, there is the Prado museum, a beautiful old town, a more "serious" atmosphere.

Barcelona is more playful, constantly celebrating, but it also has bigger slums.

I'd be inclined towards Barcelona (70 %), but Madrid is also very beautiful (30 %).
