Louis Lamour
Ever read the back of one of his books where it describes his life? Boxer, lumberjack, miner, sailed around the indies....you name it.

If we are going to mention Frodo and Sam Aragorn and Gandalf were pretty vagabondish.
Not all those who wander are lost...

I second michael Palin, it was his travel series (RTW in 80 Days/Pole to pole.Full circle/sahara) that introduced me to the world and gave me the inspiration to travel. I would love to meet this man.
By the way, do all the non uk people know who MP is? and do you get his travel shows in your countries?

heinz stucke left his home in germany in 1962 for a cycling trip, and hasn't been back since. he has been to well over 200 countries, around the world several times, and lives for pennies a day.

Yes, I've seen Michael Palin's travel show here in the US. And Monty Python has had a cult following in the US for ages.
Neocoltrane
Che Guevara
Wilfred Thesiger, author of Arabian Sands.
I would say that Paul Theroux is NOT one of the world's greatest vagabonders, considering that he has a very condescending attitude about the places he visits, and seems to be extremely set in his views... Others may think differently, but this is just my opinion of him.

Salty Ben
Not necesserily the smartest, but...
We met this 26 yrs old from CA in Bolivia. He bought a 26 foot sailboat. Someone showed him on the bay how to sail and while doing so he mentioned Ben that he is sailing to Mexico. Ben bought a hand held GPS and decided to do that himself, too. While there he decided that he would sail on to central america. In Costa Rica he decided that he would sail to Australia. After a few days of not getting very far he realized that he need to wait a few months for the winds to shift, so he took a left turn and landed in Ecuador.
This was 9 months ago, and he didn't answer the email that I sent him a few weeks ago. Where are you, Salty Ben?

This couple I met in Tibet a few years back ... they bought a sailboat, left France in 1980, and have lived on the boat ever since. Apparently there are hundreds (if not thousands) like them. They had the most amazing stories of this little subculture: 15-year-old kids who lived their entire lives at sea and couldn't read, travelers' camps set up on uninhabited islands, etc.
