travelgirltiff wrote:one of my favorite songs of all time is "ana oulache" by cheb mami. hes algerian but i think lives in france. you can hear both of those as influences in his music. its quite beautiful.

Love Cheb Mami, and rai generally. There's a great live album of a concert by Rachid Taha, Khaled, and Faudel in Paris from about 10 years ago called 1, 2, 3, Soleils. Definitely worth checking out.

French! we have a lot of world music and the French ones have got to be our favorites. Our favorite is "French Cafe". You can listen to samples of it here:

Since we're on French music, I love it too. French music that is, not Anglo-derivative music performed by French people. The latter can be bad enough to make a person cringe. Some of my favorites of the good stuff are:

-Les Negresses Vertes. Very Mediterranean-sounding stuff, ranging from gypsy to rai to classic French cafe fare.

-Mano Negra. Okay, Manu Chao has always sung in Spanish more than French, but they rock.

-Serge Gainsbourg. The ultimate louche rock star, a la française.

-Les Rita Mitsouko. Awesome 80s stuff.

-Arthur H. Dark stuff reminiscent of Tom Waits, without being derivative.

-Thomas Fersen. Very lyonnais.

Good to see other Goran Bregovic fans here! I love Gogol Bordellos as well, their music is mostly in English but it mixes balkin sounding music with punk. Die Toten hosen are one of the best German bands.

Just a few of my favorites:

Ray Barretto - Acid
Prem Joshua - Ramana
Sukwinder Singh & Sapana Awasthi - Chaiyya Chaiyya
Nussrat Fateh Ali Khan - Mustt Mustt

Now to spend the next few hours sampling all the other artists mentioned here....
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

Here's a couple:

Cape Verde Islands - Cesaria Evora, beautiful voice
Pakistan - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Try the Dub Qawwali album for starters.
