What's a home stay?

A homestay is when you essentially find a local family to take you in for x number of days/weeks, even months. Usually you get meals from them and it's a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture of wherever you are- some great memories, but can sometimes be hard to arrange depending on where you are.

I did one in Africa through a hostel that organized them at a local X'hosa village and a few that were essentially homestays in Eastern Europe by accepting offers from those little old ladies at the bus station holding "soba room zimmer" signs. Meals usually weren't included in the latter but those old ladies kept insisting on feeding me anyway! :)

I had one in Antigua arranged by the Spanish school where I was taking classes a couple years ago, when I was back in town for a couple weeks in July just called the family directly. Another in Havana was arranged by a local tour guide. Also have seen a few online tour companies advertising them.

A great experience (usually but there is the odd exception) however as Andromeda says "it can be hard to arrange depending on where you are".

Travel slow is EXACTLY what my hubby and I did for our year-long RTW. There's no other way to do long term travel for me - I'd get burnt out too quickly. The places we stayed weren't all neccessariily chilled-out beach towns (some were, of course) but for whatever reason, be it our mood, or the town, or our finances, these are the places we stayed in for about 2 weeks each:

- Cusco, Peru
- Iquique, Chile
- Buenos Aires, Argentina
- Cape Town, SA
- Taghazout, Morocco
- Istanbul, Turkey
- Bangkok, Thailand
- Krabi, Thailand
- Bali/Gili Islands, Indonesia
- Tokyo, Japan

These are some places I have chilled out in:

Lagos de Montebello, Chiapas
San Cristobal. Mexico
Mexico City, Mexico
Antiqua Guatemala
Lago Atitlan Guatemala
Lake Toba, Indonesia
Istanbul, Turkey
Konya, Turkey
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Small town, Malaysia
Taman Negara, Malaysia
Calcutta India
Bombay India
Darjeeling India
Bangalore, India
Arambol beach, Goa, India
Bayo de Puercos, El Salvador
La Libertad, Mexico
Creel Mexico
Singapore

I tend to just hang out in a place for about two weeks or more if a place seems interesting

Of these, I liked Lago Atitlan among the best, along with Darjeeling India, and Goa
Istanbul is a great place to live.

Bombay isn't a place to hang out and chill, its an adventure.

Central America, Lago Atitlan is the winner, though Felix will tell you he loves Panama.

I know this is a little old, but I'd like to add a few as I believe this 'chilling out' is so important on the road. I wouldn't have kept going for 15 months had I not spent almost 3 months in Lima, Peru, 2 months in Granda, Nicaragua, 4 weeks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and 3 months in Shillong, India. The settling down was my favourite part as I got to know the people and the language.

In Peru, Nicaragua and India I volunteered. Also did a homestay in Peru and would recommend them highly (even set up a website to help them get new lodgers: www.homestayperu.net). Then in Malaysia I did a pottery course, very expensive but good fun!

Middle East

Kas, Turkey
Olympos, Turkey

South East Asia

Chiang Mai, Thailand
Luang Prabang, Laos
Hoi An, Vietnam
Koh Phi Phi, Thailand (this might tend to get a little expensive though)

I'll add to the list of people who have mentioned Chiang Mai, Thailand. And while I know that Mexico isn't part of your current itinerary, I'd suggest Oaxaca, Mexico as well. Tons of cultural events and festivals - dance, music, theatre, etc. Just lots and lots going on as well as an amazing zocalo.

I'll keep adding to this list even though this is an old thread! My fave chill-out spots in South East Asia:

Danau (lake) Maninjau - Sumatra - Indonesia
Anywhere in Flores - Indonesia
Amed - Bali - Indonesia
Gili Air - Lombok - Indonesia
Luang Prabang - Laos
Akha Hill Tribe village - outside of Chiang Rai - North Thailand
Chiang Mai.
